Angel Eyes
This American standard written in 1946, and recorded by such greats as Sinatra, Fitzgerald and others shows one of the group’s signature concepts. Ted’s basic arrangement leaves the original melody in tact, but alters the original chord changes and borrows a little feel from “Eleanor Rigby”in the refrain. Greg and Jimi provide a moody hip hop feel in the rhythm. Ted’s twisting soprano sax lines pay homage to late Sixties spy thrillers, the kind he watched after gigs at 2am on WOR and WPIC New York. The signature Zawinul/Corea-inspired Rhodes weaves a magical spell throughout.
